New Zealand : Franz Josef Glacier

<< Previous Photo

The Franz Josef Glacier is one of the biggest and most active in the southern hemisphere.  It can move up to 1 meter per day.  We managed to ignore the warnings of erratic streams and headed straight up to the terminal face.  Unlike our glaciers in Canada that we had visited, this one has a towering cliff face that breaks off huge chunks of ice from time to time.
