"Mt Doom" is really Mount Ngauruhoe, an active volcano in the middle of Tongariro National Park.  Brennan loved these LOTR sightings.  We were also amazed at the number of locals stopping to take photos.  Turns out that days when you can actually see the mountain like this are very rare.  The combination of blue sky and so much snow occurs only once every couple of years! Lucky us.
