New Zealand : Waitomo Caves

<< Previous Photo

From Rotorua we headed across to the west side of the island and to the cave riddled region of Waitomo to visit their famous glow worm caves.  The girls opted for the traditional cave tour and boat trip that showed off these amazing little creatures.   Brian and Brennan opted for "Black Water Rafting" which involved donning wet suits and helmets (again) and crawling into an underground river to ride the rapids and jump off waterfalls in the pitch black. It was quite a ride! The sledging company was closed the day before because the water levels were too high and up to the roof of the cave.  As it was we only had a couple inches of clearance in some spots.  The photo shows the exit point for the river (and the sledgers) from the cave.  It certainly provided some of the most surreal experiences of the trip so far.  Imagine drifting along in an underground canyon looking up at what looks like a star lit night only to realize they are really glow worms on the ceiling 50 feet above you..
